Taste Hungary specializes in bespoke wine tours highlighting Hungary’s finest, most authentic food, wine, and pálinka (fruit brandy). We custom plan each of our wine trips—from day trips to Lake Balaton, to week-long trips exploring magical Tokaj—according to your own travel tastes and interests. Unlike group bus trips, our tours are hand crafted to perfectly suit you. Your personal guide will ensure that there is the option to veer from the plan and fully explore whatever captures your attention (or taste buds) along the way. Our trips can be as short as a day trip, and can extend for as long as you’d like.
Hungary is firmly, and proudly, a wine-drinking country. Its wine suffered terribly during Communism and has come a long way since the early-199os when winemakers began to once again focus on quality. What Hungarians dub their “new generation” of winemakers has brought back the passion in Hungary for drinking wine, learning about it, and, making it. Though Hungary’s wines are increasingly being recognized around the world, you won’t find many of the most interesting wines outside of Hungary’s borders (and some aren’t even sold at Budapest shops).
There are more than 140 varieties of wine grapes grown in Hungary’s 22 wine-growing regions—which produce the full spectrum of reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines. Their unique microclimates, soil types, and winemaking traditions combine to produce wines with immensely different tastes and styles from region to region. Hungary produces more white wines than reds, but there are a few regions that produce almost exclusively reds. Hungary also has an ideal climate for sparkling wines. Sample wine made from one of Hungary’s indigenous grapes (there are nearly 100 of them) like furmint or hárslevelű to see how local wine can still be.
Our winery visits include visits to the winemaking areas, and whenever possible, meeting with the winemaker who will explain his/her philosophy and the winemaking process. Some of Hungary’s wineries are sleek and stylish with dedicated tasting rooms and attached hotels. Others are old and musty—strictly family affairs where the winemaker himself does everything from pick the grapes to pour the wine. In addition to winery visits, we will work closely with during the trip-planning-process to ensure that all aspects of the trip perfectly suit your taste and interests. We can include other activities such as thermal spas, museums, cultural activities, hiking, sailing, theater, visits to cheese makers, visits to beekeepers, farm visits, festivals, etc.
What kind of Taste Hungary wine trip should you choose? Let us tell you about some of our favorite places. If you are still unsure about which region to choose, we would be happy to tell you more. Drop us an email to find out more about specific itineraries and pricing.
