Day Trip to the Etyek Wine Region

Saturday January 15th
&
Saturday January 22nd

Join us to explore the wines and local food in the up-and-coming Etyek region, the closest wine region to Budapest. The limestone soil here is ideal for sparkling wine (and the majority of the region is owned by Hungary’s largest sparkling winery). But this tour will focus on the region’s small family-run boutique wineries. The pretty town has a few old cellar rows, wineries set among beautiful vineyards, and white wines characterized by their crisp acidity (but we’ll also be tasting a few pinot noirs). We will be tasting wines at the region’s leading small winery, a winery so new that their wine is not yet on the market, and a winery connected with the restaurant where we will have lunch. We will also visit the workshop of an artisanal ham maker to taste his dry cured ham and homemade pálinka.

{9:30am} Depart from Budapest (Batthyány tér).

{10am} Cellar tour and tasting of six wines at the Hernyák Estate. The winery is owned and run by the Hernyák family, one of the region’s pioneers. They make exceptional sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, pinot noir, and some blends.

{noon} Lunch at the Rókusfalvy Winery’s restaurant, followed by a cellar tour and a tasting of six wines in their nearby cellar. Mr. Rókusfalvy is a well-known media personality and a respected wine maker. His restaurant’s menu and atmosphere is a nice mix of local traditions and modern touches.

{3:30pm} Visit the workshop of an artisan ham producer. We will taste a selection of his cured meats and hams, homemade bread, and pálinka.

{5pm} Tour and tasting at the Kertész Cellar, a family-run, experimental winery which is one of the newest in the region.

{6:30pm} Look around the old cellar row in Etyek

{7pm} Depart for Budapest

{7:30pm} Return to Budapest, drop-off at Batthyány tér
