Market + Wine Tour

Combine a morning tour of the Central Market Hall with an afternoon wine tour and get an education in both Hungarian food and wine.

There’s no better introduction to the culture of Hungarian food than visiting Budapest’s bustling markets. The 19th-century Central Market Hall is Budapest’s cathedral of food, and one of Europe’s finest market halls. It is an essential daily shopping stop for many locals, as are Budapest’s many other markets. Wandering its aisles reveals how intensely important food and cooking are in Hungary. Seasonal produce still rules, and the full bounty of the Hungarian countryside is on display. Along the way we will talk about seasonal produce and eating habits; local traditions and specialties; recipes and the Hungarian eating style; and the culture of food in Hungary. We will talk about how food and wine fit into the lifestyle of Budapesters and how eating in Budapest is different than in the rest of the country. Best of all, we will get a taste of local life by experiencing how Hungarians do their day-to-day shopping, and tasting market staples along the way.

We will then travel by car to Etyek, an up-and-coming region which is the closest wine region to Budapest (just a 40 minute drive), arriving in time for lunch with wine pairings. After lunch we will explore this gorgeous little village, which holds many small top-notch wineries and old rows of cellars, and visit one more winery for a tour and tasting. Etyek’s limestone soil produces mainly white wines characterized by their crisp acidity, as well as pinot noir, the region’s red wine specialty. You’ll be back in Budapest in time for dinner. Because the markets are closed, this tour is not available on Sundays.
